Government-assisted private schools, from kindergarten to grade 7, also flourish; the 141 student Catholic school runs a particularly strong music program. The Nelson Waldorf school has grown to over 160 children since its inception in 1981 and in 1987 it became one of four Canadian full member schools of the association of Waldorf schools of North America This venture became the catalyst for a remarkable East/West cultural program that has lead to regular international exchanges of school students. Nelson is twinned with the Japanese City of Shuzenji which has built a theme park less than two hours from Tokyo, entitled "Nelson - A Village of Canada" and featuring a reproduction of Nelson's original City Hall, the Nelson railway station and museum. The park comes complete with 'Kootenay Lake' and a bridge. More than a million Japanese visitors annually pass through this unusual theme park.
