QuakeWorld

For those who don't know, QuakeWorld is a extension to Quake the popular 3d gaming experience.

QuakeWorld has been optimized for internet play over modems. If you have played Quake over modems you might of noticed that it was painful even when you were alone and there was no action going around you. QuakeWorld fixes (is suppose to) that. With 32 players, a game over a 28.8k or 33.6k modem ain't too bad...

Things you need

Here are the things you need to play quakeworld on the netidea server.

Registered Quake

I can't help you here. You'll have to buy or find it yourself. The pack files are 50 MB so I doubt you want to download it at 14.4k....

QuakeWorld

This requires installed registered quake. Find the windows 95 client here. Don't forget to shift-click to save it. Run it once you've downloaded it to install the quakeworld client.

TeamFortress

The quakworld server is running Team Fortress. This is a fun and intresting quake conversion. The only catch is you need the team fortress resource pack. Download it and create a directory \quake\fortress and unzip it there.

The resource pack comes in two files. tf25rel.zip and tf26crel.zip. While the first file is 3 MB the good news is that the second file is 160k or so. Get them both and unzip them in \quake\fortress. There is nothing extra you have to do. Now you will be able to play on any team fotress quakeworld server (including ours).

Maps

I have turned off QuakeWorld dynamic map loading. Simply put, the files are huge: 800k or more. At the rate QW downloads you could be sitting there for hours. Here is a list of the maps we are currently running:

Oops, did I say "maps"?? I meant "map". Anyways, get it, 2fort4 is a standard map anyways.

For those of you who don't know, unzip the level file into \quake\fortress\maps. You may have to create the directory.

Quakeworld uses the 'cryptic' so called "console" mode to do stuff. You'll need a reference guide to the quakeworld console. If you require a printed copy use this one instead.

Here are some quick quake tips for connecting:
At the console type "connect everest.netidea.com". Make sure you are online. This will put you into the local server.

Server Info

The server is running qwsv for linux, runing between 16 and 32 max clients. It's running team fortress with teamplay mode on.

The QuakeWorld current stats are avaliable. Find out who is there before you join.

See you there!

PS: Thanks to all the really cool guys who wrote and ported quakeworld to linux. Thanks to whomever wrote the console guide. Sorry about 'ripping it, but I really needed a copy bad. I promise not to modify it ever. Bye for now.
