Castling:

Within this period, the Queen was given more mover ability. As a result, checkmates occurred more frequently and with greater ease. The King needed greater protection to balance the aggressive Queen. The castling maneuver was created to address this concern.

In the Middle Ages mobile towers were important rolling fortresses into which the King might retire for protection.

Ruy Lopez utilized 'castling' and the move was first documented in his openings book published in 1561.

By 1630, "castling" was recognized by Britain, France and Germany. Italians had their own version called "free castling". The Rook moves as far as the King's position and the King moves less or as far as the Rook's position.

5 Reasons you can not Castle

1) the row between the King and Rook must be empty

2) the King or Rook can not have previously moved

3) the King can not castle 'out of check'

4) the King can not castle 'into check'

5) "The King can not cross the path of an angry man"

In the diagram above, which King may castle? Due to rule #2, the black King may not castle. Due to rule #5, the white King may not castle to the left. Therefore the white King may only castle to the right.

P L A Y : - F O U R C O R N E R S

• to win you must checkmate your opponent

• remember 'passed pawns' have the chance to be promoted

  • in 95% of games at least one player castles
  • 90% of castles are to the Kings' side (right for white, left for black).
Because the Kings' side is closer to the corner, and supports the h pawn.
