Welcome to Match Mate. This web site is a combination of my research, lesson notes, and mini games. I am available to to host workshops for your school or district.
Together, beginners and experienced students maybe led through my flexible system of eight simple mini-games. Each lesson introduces one piece at a time. The "mini games", give students enough practice to build confidence and develop strategies before tackling all the pieces in a regular game of chess.
My name is Chris Laurie, am an elementary teacher with eight years of teaching experience. From my new home in Nelson, B.C. and I am working hard to promote chess in the Kootenays. I have successfully taught students from grades three to nine.
I have all the resources to lead whole class instruction or assist teachers interested in establishing extracurricular chess clubs. Successful chess coaches do not have to know more than their students. A coach's role, like in ice hockey, is to maintain healthy sportsmanship and encourage players to improve. It would be my pleasure to assist with organizing matches between classes or schools.
My goal is
to introduce as many students to the game as possible and engage
students to improve their concentration and develop respect for one
another. I look forward to discussing your needs and answering
any questions or you can leave a message
for me at Trafalgar Middle School 250-352-5591
