Chess for Fun Everyone was a winner at the 2003 Beginners Luck Chess Tournament in Slocan Park. This is the first of three events to promote chess education. Casual no pressure friendly competition gives kids the opportunity to test their chess skills with others from local neighbourhoods. 40 Girls and boys aged six to thirteen learned a lot from one another.
Finalist in the Beginners division are in first place Evan Russell, tied for second Stefanie Cutler, and Philip in third was Adam Butler. Ribbon winners in the experts division in first to third place are Trevor Yonkman, tied in second Teresa Cutler and Joseph Graham, third Jonah Fraser. Snacks were heartily appreciated as kids munched their way through five to six games.
Everyone left with a door prize as well as greater understanding of quick attacks and safe defences.
Tournament host Chris Laurie invites all avid young chess to anticipate tournaments announced for January and Febrary.
